Personal Style and Authenticity Abroad – A Journey of Self-Expression and Discovery
Personal style is more than just clothes and accessories; it’s a reflection of who we are, where we come from, and where we’re headed. Moving abroad brings profound shifts in identity, and personal style often mirrors this transformation.
For some, moving abroad is the perfect opportunity to experiment and redefine what “authentic” style looks like in a new context. A new city offers new inspiration—whether it’s the local fashion trends, the influence of local designers, or the practical needs of a different climate or lifestyle.
Alternatively, moving can inspire us to deepen our connection to our existing style as a way to stay rooted in our identity and home culture.
I remember when I first moved to Amsterdam I wanted to fit in but also express my individuality so new people that I met would see the “real me”. One day at school dropoff a woman who I didn’t know stopped me in the hall and said:
“You know, Dutch men don’t like makeup” and then walked away.
I came from a culture(Utah, USA)where at least light makeup was usually worn out of the house by women my age and I liked that part of my routine, it helped keep me grounded.
The next few weeks that rang in my ears as I got ready to leave the house to take the kids to school.
I had to ask myself: do I change this to fit in as most people in Amsterdam do not wear daily makeup or keep it? (and importantly: why did Dutch Men have anything to do with my choices?!)
Style as a Personal Language
We recently spoke with Jeanina Zgirie, a fellow Peregrine and Personal stylist based in Amsterdam, about her journey from Romania and redefining her identity and style in Netherlands.
On our podcast she discusses how style is a personal language, a way to community our values, individuality and our heritage.
The way Jeanina approaches wardrobe design with her clients is like curating an art gallery of you. Keep the pieces that resonate, let go of the items that don’t align with your current self or vision. Be intentional and sustainable with your choices.
Amsterdam’s Eclectic Fashion Culture
Amsterdam has a vibrant and eclectic fashion culture. It’s a city where Jeanina believes anyone can embrace their unique style. The city offers the freedom to experiment and integrate influences from different cultures, making it an ideal place for people to reinvent their wardrobe and, in many ways, themselves. Jeanina’s approach helps clients feel confident and empowered, blending their heritage with the spirit of their new home.
Jeanina shared some of her favorite spots to shop in Amsterdam.
My favorite vintage and pre loved boutiques in town are Tamago and Enso for their impeccably curated collection of designer pieces.
Eenvoud is in my opinion one of the most interesting jewelry boutiques in town, there’s something for everyone inside.
Arket and COS still offer good quality at affordable prices and I love their classic pieces.
Daniele Dentici is a hidden gem in Jordan that has one of the greatest collections of Italian leather shoes and bags at great prices.
Finally I would add to my list The Blue Marble in De Pijp. They sell dead stock from sustainable brands at amazing prices.
